WWE Fatal 4 Way review (DVD) ★★★

Review by Adam Stephen Kelly
UK Certification 15 | UK RRP £17.99 | DVD Region 2 | Runtime 155 minutes

For the first time in history, WWE took its three main event title matches and made them all Fatal 4 Way encounters on the very same night, pitting the respective champions in extreme danger of losing their gold. In yet another titular-themed pay-per-view event, Fatal 4 Way proved to be a decent night of action, delivering on two of the signature attractions, but what it has, for the most part, in consistently solid wrestling it lacks in show-stealing moments. None of the matches on the June super-card were breakouts and so the event bares little significance to history apart from in its original concept. I enjoyed Fatal 4 Way, but chances are a year from now I won't remember much about it.

Intercontinental Championship: Kofi Kingston (c) vs. Drew McIntyre ???
They put on a passable match at the lackluster Over the Limit event, but came out on fire at Fatal 4 Way, trumping their previous encounter and delivering a solid match-up for the gold. Kofi's first pay-per-view defense since claiming the title, he and McIntyre pushed this bout to the next level, and all with SmackDown General Manager Teddy Long sat cowering at ringside thanks to the brash Scotsman's relationship with Mr. McMahon. Although a ref bump is not usually the best spot to include on the opening match of a major card, I enjoyed seeing Long get his revenge on the challenger after being bullied into taking Charles Robinson's place as the match official. The only real issue I have is with Matt Hardy's interference – the fact that their rivalry was the underlying feud in both his and McIntyre's careers for quite some time at this point, just having Hardy attack him a number of times and then have their beef settled on free TV does little else but make their storyline look tremendously weak when put up against a mega event-level feud like Drew and Kingston's.

Divas Championship Fatal 4 Way: Eve (c) vs. Gail Kim vs. Maryse vs. Alicia ?
A bog-standard Divas match, which isn't a very good thing - short, to the point and pretty much devoid of action. Alicia Fox wins her first Divas Title in number one of the three Fatal 4 Way matches of the night, and no one is really bothered. Next.

Evan Bourne vs. Chris Jericho ???
In a match that some folks incorrectly speculated was the continuation of the road to Chris Jericho's second WWE departure, Y2J and Evan “Air” Bourne put on a clinic at Fatal 4 Way. What a genuine surprise it was to see the underdog overcome the veteran Jericho, especially in such a solid outing. This was thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining and I long for the rematch. Perhaps then Jericho will seal Bourne's fate rather than succumbing to the wonder and beauty of the Air Bourne Shooting Star Press. And pushing it one star further wouldn't go amiss, either.

World Heavyweight Championship Fatal 4 Way: Jack Swagger (c) vs. Big Show vs. Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk ???
Of course we know now that Rey Mysterio's victory and capture of the World Title didn't turn out to be as sweet as many had hoped, after he lost it to Kane at Money in the Bank just a month later, turning out to be nothing more than a transitional champion to pave the way for the Big Red Monster/Undertaker feud over the belt. Still, it was an impressive victory for the masked man from San Diego as he overcame three opponents in the second of the night's Fatal 4 Ways. This wasn't the longest of matches and was for the most part devoid of storytelling sans Kane's interfering attack on CM Punk, but it featured a couple of nice spots, including a simultaneous double German Suplex as the defending champ Jack Swagger sent Punk for the ride as the Straight Edge Superstar had the same intentions for Mysterio. A fast-paced frenzy of a title match.

United States Championship: The Miz (c) vs. R-Truth ??
From the pairing of these two I was expecting a better match, but sadly that is not what we got. It was merely okay. This one meandered along and the out of nowhere roll-up finish did little to quell the uninteresting majority of the contest and end it on a positive note, instead being another disappointment. Having The Miz win the title the previous week on RAW in a Fatal 4 Way was not a good move in my eyes, as I've never been a fan of giving away a signature match of a pay-per-view event on free TV. Even with different competitors, it still takes something away from the hype, especially when your event is built around three of the same type of match. It's like when TNA put on a King of the Mountain Match three days before their Slammiversary event which is the only time in the year they have that bout. It just doesn't make sense. That's not to say I didn't want The Miz to get the gold, as I'm very much a fan of his and championship gold around his waist is always a good thing. But it's too bad the fans weren't fans of this match, as they couldn't really have cared less going by their reaction, but then again this lackluster encounter followed a World Heavyweight Championship bout.

Six-Person Mixed Tag Team Match: The Hart Dynasty vs. The Usos ??
Even now, over three months after this event, I still don't care about Jimmy and Jay Uso. I don't like their look and I don't believe in them as a tag team. What I do like, however, is the inclusion of the legendary Jimmy Snuka's daughter Tamina in the Divas roster, so that's a plus at least. Opinion of the Usos aside, this was a good tag team collision. There was a cool spot involving Tyson Kidd taking a Samoan Drop into the crowd barricade after being caught in midair by one of the brothers, as well as a nice springboard somersault senton to the outside. Decent action that was well above the United States Title match of the same score, almost getting three stars from me.

WWE Championship Fatal 4 Way: John Cena (c) vs. Sheamus vs. Randy Orton vs. Edge ???
There's no doubt that this fight for the top title could have been a lot better, but with frantic action throughout it wasn't disappointing and I enjoyed its conclusion. Some have said that the Nexus invasion that allowed Sheamus to steal the victory and the WWE Championship, for the second time in his carerer, was too much of a rehash of the shocking angle on RAW, but I say more power to those behind the scenes for coming up with the idea for them to storm Fatal 4 Way, as it's one thing to disrupt an event on free TV, but another to make your presence known on a major card live on pay-per-view. I've liked the Nexus storyline from day one. The show closed with fans chanting for Daniel Bryan as the three defeated Superstars lay wasted in the ring courtesy of the NXT graduates, and little did they know that they'd get their wish - eventually.

EXTRAS ? NXT Plot: In this minute-long home video exclusive, the rookies from the first season of NXT, who would of course later be known as Nexus, plot their backstage sneak attack on Evan Bourne and The Hart Dynasty before carrying it out, so really there's only thirty seconds of unseen footage here as you can already see the assault on the actual event.
