Cert UK 12A | US PG-13 | Runtime 90 minutes | Directed by RJ Cutler

Chiefly of interest to fashionistas and media acolytes, this documentary about the preparation and assembly of the September 2007 issue of Vogue magazine - a gargantuan edition full of fashion items - is nevertheless adroitly done and surprisingly agreeable.

It focuses on editor Anna Wintour, undercutting her reputation for intimidation and coldness by presenting her in human terms. She's an interesting interviewee recounting her early life and comes across as aloof but not dislikeable when dealing with her staff - certainly not the harridan that Meryl Streep exemplified in The Devil Wears Prada. But what gives the film its heart is her number 2, ginger haired creative director Grace Coddington. Grace is all passion and vigour to Anna's studied, pragmatic intelligence. They make a good team and their constant needling of each other is refreshing and entertaining. Grace tells the documentary crew at one point: "I love it when we talk about money in front of you guys. It really annoys her."

We see the decisions taken in the making of the magazine, the photo shoots and the eccentric characters that feature in its design. Sienna Miller is the cover star and is shown turning up at the Vogue offices with her sister for wardrobe fittings. Later on the photographs from her Rome shoot with Mario Testino are scrutinised by the editors. They complain about her hair and her teeth, stating that the photos will have to be retouched. Poor Sienna, one feels sorry for the poor girl in having her features discussed so mercilessly.

The documentary is full of sly asides and subtle winks, keenly observing the participants and pointing out their foibles, while also maintaining a humourously affectionate attitude towards them. A worthwhile effort that reminds one of a bygone era when magazines had money and could be profitable thanks to happy advertisers. Worth a look.
