Peter Kay: Stand Up UKay (DVD) ★

Reviewed by Neil Davey
Stars Peter Kay, together with an assortment of people off the street who aren't comedians, aren't in the slightest bit funny and shouldn't be treated as if they're the best thing to happen to home video since pizza delivery by film companies / distributors who have clearly forgotten the true meaning of Christmas.

Written by Peter Kay | UK certification 15 | UK RRP £21.99 | DVD Region 2 | Runtime 117 minutes

It must be nearly Christmas, because here come the rip-off stocking fillers. Stand Up UKay is billed as a ‘joyful celebration of not only the comedy of Peter Kay but of British humour in the 21st Century’. It’s not. It’s a cynical cash in on the popularity on this particular stand-up.

Basically, it’s a rehash of the last two huge selling DVDs, only this time the good bits are interspersed with interviews with members of the public either attempting to recreate Kay’s observational routines or pointing out that Kay is, like, funny, because people do dance like that at weddings. And that stuff about his nan? Well, I know an old person and they do that. It’s brilliant. It’s funny cos it’s true.

Yes. We know. That’s why we laughed at the previous two Kay DVDs and sat stoney-faced through this abhorrent rip-off. We really don’t need a load of people off the streets to grunt about Kay’s popularity or bugger up his sweetly old-fashioned stand-up, and there’s no excuse for this sort of shoddy cash-in. You’d feel screwed if you’d bought this for a fiver at the petrol station, but £21.99? That’s criminal.

EXTRAS The Comic Relief "(I'm Gonna Be) 500 Miles" video; scene selection; the chance to listen to more collective "wit" from the dullards already given more airtime than they bleeding deserve.
