Tonight's terrestrial telly tips

Comedy rules the ether tonight, with the return of two top shows to BBC1. There's a very welcome reappearance of Have I Got News For You at 9pm.Martin Clunes is chairing the chaos, Charlie Brooker and Arlene Philips are the guests and you can bet your copy of Guardian Weekly that the Carter-Ruck shenanigans are going to get a right royal shredding by the panel. I can't wait. Hot on HIGNFY's heels is The Armstrong and Miller Show at 9.30pm. The pair are reprising some of the much-loved characters from previous shows, such as the barking mad RAF pilots, but also introducing some new ones. Step forward a foot-in-mouth Tory and the apologetic kids' TV presenters with a penchant for wild nights out.

The best of the rest is on BBC4 (featuring it'sregular Friday music strand),tonight devoted to a magnificent synthesiser special. It's back to the 80s at 9pm with Synth Britannia, a documentary devoted to the huge upsurge of synth pop that rode the post-punk wave. Featuring all the early pioneers - Gary Numan, Soft Cell, New Order, Depeche Mode, the Human League and many more. It's followed at 10.30pm by Synth at the BBC, 90 minutes of archive performances of the best synth acts around at the time. Enjoy the nostalgia trip if you're old enough, otherwise prepare to discover some true classics from 25-30 years ago.

Lastly, to inject some sobriety, Channel 4's (7.35pm) investigates the aftermath of the civil war in Liberia, in which children were routinely raped and mutilated with machetes. Harrowing stuff, but a story that shouldn't be ignored.
