Johannes Roberts' Worst Films of 2010

Posted by Stuart OConnor | Mon, 20/12/2010 - 16:02

Having presented F, one of the show-stealing films of FrightFest this past summer and his most critically-acclaimed to date (we loved it), the year has been good to the career of writer/director Johannes Roberts. He's just wrapped production in Ireland on his latest film, a TV movie for SyFy by the name of Roadkill, and so is fresh out of the fire of film-making and hopefully all set for a nice, peaceful Christmas. Well, he'll be ready to settle down once he's vented on 2010 films that he didn't think much of is what we mean. Over to Johannes.

I have to say I genuinely could not assemble a list of the five top movies of 2010. I just started writing it and top of the list (and about the only film I could think of) was Up in the Air - just great unfussy storytelling about 3 dimensional characters. Wonderfully bittersweet. I just looked it up. It's actually 2009. Fuck. So worst movies of the year? Oh so much choice. So many terrible terrible movies...

5. Resident Evil 4 - I actually really liked the first and was quite pleased to see Anderson behind the camera again but this was possibly the most plot free 'movie' I have ever seen. Tedious.

4. Cop out - Kevin Smith's dire buddy movie. Toe curlingly unfunny.

3. Survival of the Dead - I guess Romero's place as a dominant creative and commercial force in horror cinema pretty much died with Land of the Dead but the final nail in his coffin was this straight to video entry. Nothing could prepare for how bad it was.

2. Robin Hood - I probably don't really need to justify this one - stupendously bad and so, so, so boring. Awfu, awful movie. But maybe not as bad as...

1. The Nightmare on Elm Street remake. Actually it's a bit unfair to put this at the top of the list since I walked out of the cinema halfway through so for all I know the final half was incredible. But I justify its inclusion on the simple basis that I am the person that sat through the entire Wickerman and Hitcher remakes. This was worse. Quite how they managed to do that is beyond belief...

Maybe next year will be better?

Let's hope so, Johannes!
