In an age where managers and valets are all but extinct in the landscape of professional wrestling, it's incredibly refreshing to be able to sit through a film commemorating one of the industry's finest entertainers and fondly remember a time where the person in a wrestler's corner wasn't just a bland Diva, one-dimensional interpreter or tag team partner, but a larger than life individual whose character sometimes eclipsed that of the athlete they were managing. One such man who was always stealing the show was Bobby “The Brain” Heenan.
While this release is certainly decent, it unfortunately isn't anything more. The main feature is surprisingly short, clocking in at only 50 minutes in length, and rather disappointingly doesn't include any new footage whatsoever of the legend himself. Unlike in most of these career-chronicling DVD sets, Heenan isn't around to tell stories and talk us through his decades in the wild and unpredictable business that is wrestling, which is a real shame. It would be perfectly understandable given his current state of health, but he suddenly crops up a little in the extras, so there was definitely a noteworthy amount filmed that never made the final cut, and it'd be interesting to know why.
So many important times in Heenan's life and career are only briefly given the spotlight as the documentary whizzes by. A narrator summarises his entire childhood over a few photographs in less than a minute and immediately we're plunged into his run in the AWA. 50 minutes simply isn't enough time to adequately celebrate the career of a man so utterly esteemed, respected and deserving as Bobby “The Brain” Heenan, but I'm still very glad that the greatest manager in the history of wrestling has received this kind of recognition. A respectable and enjoyable Heenan DVD is better than no Heenan DVD.
